Q. What are Varicose and Spider Veins?
A. Spider veins, or telangiectasia, are those small red, blue and purple blood vessels that appear most frequently on the face and legs(especially on the thighs and inner knee). Varicose veins are slightly larger in size and may appear raised with a bluish color.
Q. Will Laser Therapy Work on my Legs?
A. Prior to treatment Dr. Wright will review your medical history to determine the severity of the problem, to determine your skin type, and to decide what treatment modality will be most effective to achieve your goals. Most veins can be successfully treated with laser vein therapy. However, some veins may be larger, more visible and tender, and may be related to a more serious vein disorder. Dr. Wright will conduct a careful evaluation to decide if further medical testing is required before laser vein therapy is attempted.
Q. What are the Treatments Like?
A. First we identify the veins to be treated. A pulse of light (laser) energy is then delivered along the length of the vessel, larger veins first. A topical anesthetic will be applied prior to treatment to minimize any discomfort. Some experience a mild burning sensation with the pulse of the light. Following the treatment, the pain is minimal to non-existent.
Q. How many treatments will I need?
A. The majority of the treated vessels will be gone for good with one or two treatments. For the maximum long-term resolution, one or two additional treatments may be necessary. Most treatments are in four to six week intervals. The number of treatments necessary depends on the number of vessels being treated, and the color and size of those vessels.
Q. What is recovery like?
A. Following treatment, you are encouraged to resume most normal activities immediately. Vigorous activities should be avoided in the first 24 hours. Bruising around the treated areas usually disappears after the first week. A tan or brownish pigment may persist for a few weeks when larger veins are involved. Although the final results may not be apparent for several months, most of our patients enjoy the comfort and the look of legs without unsightly red, blue and purple veins.
